I’m a sociology academic researching how consumer markets are made, especially for dull, difficult or challenging products like life and health insurance and doorstep and payday loans. Current work explores how this is playing out through the new market/ state settlements being forged particularly under the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in the US and in the current wave of NHS reforms in the UK. How these legislative changes are working with digital technologies to transform how health is gamified, measured, promoted and priced is at the centre of this.

My background is in disease management and behavior change for chronic disease. I am working in corporate health and wellness and trying to understand the influence of environment, social support, digital marketing and other coaching techniques on helping people achieve their health goals. We are working on a system that provides personalized recommendations for programs that are offered by their employer. I’ve been a long-time follower of QS and feel that the citizen scientists of QS are pushing the envelope on how we can know ourselves better. I am looking for ways to scale behavior change and provide institutional and environmental (at the level of the employer) support for individuals making change.
