I am a mom, a nurse practitioner, and a rebel. I spend all day, every day trying to figure out how I can help children with brain based differences be successful. Two years ago I created an integrated care model. It’s the one that I looked for everywhere for my child and couldn’t find. I am interested in any data that helps me help children, thus my interest in the Health Data Exploration Network. I am passionate about self collected data and the power it brings to the patient and family in the healthcare space. As a provider, I am desperate for data integration, exchange and interoperability.

Andrew Raij is a Research Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Simulation and Training, where he is a senior member of the Synthetic Reality Lab (SREAL). His expertise lies in human-computer interaction as it relates to virtual reality, pervasive health, and their intersection, usually with applications to healthcare and behavior change. Broadly, he is interested in designing effective (and perhaps fun) interactions with personal health data. He is currently working on ways to visualize and present health data to individuals, ranging from the person who captured the data to the researcher who wants to leverage the data to build better health interventions. He is also interested in the use of avatars and other representations of the self as a component of interventions. Prior to joining SREAL, he was an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of South Florida, completed a post-doc in mobile health technology at the University of Memphis, and received a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida.

My arsenal of memories is packed with significant others’ unfruitful use of healthcare. My grandfather died following a stroke, whereupon cancer was found and left untreated. His wife, my grandmother, I never knew because she died from a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis that was unfound until three months was too late to act. My father has developed asthma, several cardiovascular conditions and sleep apnea from smoking cigarettes every day without end since he was fifteen, regardless of his doctors’ recommendations. Many peers have had unplanned pregnancies or contracted HIV from a lack of sexual counseling and use of protective methods. Each case has lead me to the same two questions: why does this happen; and how can it be solved? My intent in answering these questions is to enhance health through careful study and responsible research. Specifically, I seek to investigate the physical, mental and social associations of health service use in a population.Through social media, it may be possible to answer these questions.
