Dr. Chunara is an Assistant Professor at New York University, jointly appointed between Computer Science & Engineering and the Global Institute of Public Health. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical and Medical Engineering at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, her S.M. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT and her B.Sc. (Honors) in Electrical Engineering at Caltech. Dr. has gained clinical experiences at hospitals in Pakistan, Kenya, and the United States, and was named an MIT Technology Review Innovator Under 35 in 2014. Her research interests focus on harnessing novel information sources and developing computational techniques to use the data to describe and predict population-level public health issues. She has worked with a variety of data types including from Twitter, Facebook and Amazon Mechanical Turk, mobile phone survey, sensor and call record data as well as built platforms to garner syndromic and diagnostic data directly from individuals. She has used this data to understand both infectious and chronic disease risk factors and augment existing spatio-temporal epidemiological models.

I conduct research aimed at understanding policies and factors in the environment that impact health behaviors. Specifically I have over 16 years of experience as a principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous small and large-scale school and community-level studies designed to examine and reduce modifiable risk factors such as physical inactivity, obesity, and tobacco use. My research program also focuses on better understanding racial/ethnic and cultural differences in health behaviors and environments as they specifically relate to health disparities. My research involves the use of geospatial data analysis techniques, and I am always interested in learning about new methods and technology to assist in capturing more precise or specific measures of the environment.

Ever since college, I have been involved in analyzing health care data from hospital data to pharmacy data. I have had experiences at Epic on their BI team to McKesson on their pharmacy analytics team. Currently, I work on Stanford Health Care’s Analytics’ team. We build visualizations as well as source and modify clinical and operational data based on the need. I personally have worked on projects around Sepsis, alert fatigued, enhanced recovery after surgery, pneumatic tube systems, blood utilization, cardiovascular registries, public health integration to clinical data, and much more. I have a passion to find connections in data and absolutely have a passion to make a difference.

I’ve been working in health research and patient engagement for nearly 25 years, and am continually examining strategies to improve health and healthcare, I’m exhilarated by the possibilities of health data, but clear-eyed about the challenges. I look forward to learning from and contributing to the Health Data Exploration Network as a means to understand everything from the latest developments in data science to consumer attitudes toward health data use. My day job is Associate Director of the CER Methods and Infrastructure Program at the Patient-centered Outcomes Research Institute, where I am providing leadership for the development of PCORnet, our National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network. PCORnet is predicated on more effective uses of health data, so the HDE network will be a great resource for me.

I am an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota. My overarching clinical and research interests relate to facilitating the empowerment of older adults to optimize their health and wellness. I am currently developing an intervention designed to enhance the motivation of older adults for engaging in physical activities known to reduce fall risk, whose delivery is augmented with a personal activity tracker, Fitbit. Our research has shown that such technology is feasible and usable among novice users over the age of 70, and at the same time has revealed opportunities for enhancing and tailoring specific aspects of displayed data.
