May 2nd - 3rd, 2017, Atkinson Hall/ Calit2/ Qualcomm Institute, La Jolla, CA
Tuesday May 2nd, 2017: HDE Network Meeting
Wednesday May 3rd, 2017: HDE Data Dive
The Health Data Exploration Project is holding its third annual Network Meeting at the Qualcomm Institute in San Diego, CA on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017.
This year’s theme is “Representing the Person: Promoting Social Justice in the Use of Personal Health Data.” We will explore and discuss questions about the ways that personal data represents individuals and populations.
Do our datasets adequately represent underserved populations?
Do personal and ubiquitous sensors capture the necessary data to meaningfully represent lifestyle and activity?
What biases are evident in these new representational technologies?
The event is open to all, and will include invited presentations, posters, and panel sessions that will provide opportunities to discuss these issues.
This year’s meeting will also include a research poster session to present the work of Network members. We are particularly interested in highlighting projects that showcase the use of personal health data for research but all submissions will be considered. Proposals are encouraged from all stakeholders in the personal health data ecosystem: behavioral, clinical and public health researchers, computer scientists, technology and data-related companies, methodologists, data analysts, qualitative researchers and others. Participation by graduate students, post-docs, company interns and the like are particularly encouraged. Please view the linked (below) for further information on the submission process. The deadline to submit an abstract is now extended to March 31, 2017 (5:00 pm PST).
We will also be holding our second annual Data Dive the following day on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017, in which participants can get hands-on with personal health data! Join us for exploration and discovery with a variety of data sources in this workshop/hackathon format. Data specialists will be on hand to walk us through data sets and demonstrate tools for analysis and visualization. This year, we are offering free American Gut Project* kits to the first 50 individuals who sign up. Be sure to sign up soon: participation is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis.
*We will mail kits to participants upon registration. We encourage you to submit your kit samples early so that you can receive your results in time for the data dive!
