Biography

Patti Brennan, RN, PhD, is the Lillian L. Moehlman Bascom Professor, School of Nursing and College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin. Following seven years of clinical practice in critical care nursing and psychiatric nursing, Dr. Brennan held several academic positions. She developed the ComputerLink, an electronic network designed to reduce isolation and improve self-care among home care patients and directed HeartCare, a WWW-based tailored information and communication service that helped home-dwelling cardiac patients recover faster, and with fewer symptoms. Dr. Brennan directed Project HealthDesign, a RWJ- funded initiative designed to stimulate the next generation of personal health records. She also conducts external evaluations of novel HIT architectures, such health information exchanges and SMART, an “apps” approach to existing electronic health records (EHRs) and data repositories. Brennan leads the Living Environments Laboratory at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, which includes a 6-sided virtual reality CAVE that her group uses to re-create visually every environment on earth, and develop new ways for effective visualization of high dimensional data. Supported by AHRQ, her group explores the impact of household contexts on personal health information management. She is fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing (1991) and the American College of Medical Informatics (1993). Dr. Brennan was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2002, and in 2009 became an elected member of the New York Academy of Medicine.

Mostly I come to this field as an interested citizen. I am frankly very impressed at the pace of change and the potential of technology in health. I am also interested in the wider social implications of scientific advance, and how the public can be best informed, and appropriately involved, in these areas of amazing progress (e.g. nanotech, genomics, digital health, biomedical engineering etc.) I would love to see this whole area move more quickly, so that real cures and improvements will come about. I would also love to see a cultural shift toward awareness and embrace of Science as humanity’s best hope for a bright future!

I am particular interested in the emergence of consumer trends and the shifting of healthcare landscape towards outcome-based model and consumer healthcare informatics. In particular, I work on gauging and enhancing the impacts on wellness/prevention via the curation of exogenous data sources (including patient-generated information and mobile/wearable/sensor data). Would be happy to talk to other enthusiasts in the Health Data Exploration Network about this topic.

Biography

Rachel Kalmar is a data scientist, community organizer, and world record holder for number of wearable sensors worn continuously. Wrangling noisy data, she investigates how to make wearable and sensor data useful and interactive. A Stanford neuroscience PhD, Rachel has spent over a decade using data to explain, predict and influence behavior.
At the intersection of healthcare, hardware, and data, Rachel focuses on the application of data and the broader ecosystems within which it exists. What are barriers to data access, sharing and interoperability, and how can we enable more open data ecosystems to better serve the public interest?
Rachel is active in the Bay Area hardware community and runs Sensored, a 1000+ person meetup group for people working on sensor devices and applications (meetup.com/Sensored). Combining her love of data, the brain, and novel visualizations, Rachel spends her weekends working on Dr. Brainlove, an interactive brain-shaped data platform and jungle gym the size of a bus.
Rachel is an alumna of Stanford’s Neurosciences Program, the Hasso Plattner Institute for Design (aka the d.school), Rock Health, and Misfit Wearables.
